Flash as an alternative for Javascript and Layers?
We are considering to build some of the Fleck functionality in Flash. One of the reasons is that some content
on webpages floats above HTML and hides our notes and toolbar. Flash might be a solution.
The reason why we haven’t done this earlier is because I figured that not everybody uses Flash and the solution would be worse than the problem. But a few weeks ago someone pointed out to me that over 95% of the internet population now has some version of Flash installed.
I had to look that up at the Macromedia website becuase I just couldn’t believe it. But here it is: “Flash content reaches 98% of Internet viewers“.
According to Macromedia it is even 98.3% of all internet users.
That is why we are now looking into Flash as an alternative technology for our interface. If you know someone who would like to work on this with us, preferably in Amsterdam, then contact us.

I’d really want to advice you to do a couple of tests first. There’s quite a lot of issues with showing Flash over HTML in different browsers as anyone who made a flash banner can tell you. Also remember that Macromedia has a reason to say this penetration number is so high. Having a Flash plugin installed does not automatically mean that one can actualy view Flash content. There’s quite some businesses who filter out Flash content to stop their employees from playing games or watching vids.
Best of luck though!

Do remember there are some feisty firewalls that completely rip out any flash content out of the page. (like the at the nnnhuge govt. organisation i’m working now)

Flash is nice, but I think you will have problems when you use it as an overlay on a page. Another problem is the penetration in big companies.
A lot webcompanies have to develop software in ancient versions of Flash because the application has to work intranets in heavily controlled business environments. But your current Ajax solutions probably does not work there either.

I think that’s a great idea! I have problems using Fleck right now with my blog. For some reason it loads 3 times on the page and the buttons don’t work. Maybe a Flash version would fix this. (Check out the weird results you currently get trying to use Fleck www.FreshPeel.com)

Could Ajax not solve this text hidding with some mouse-over function that pops out the note which by default would collapsed ?
